am i crazy to think extreme individual wealth is immoral? that in an ideal world, the billions gates has paid in donations should actually be managed by the people/govt?

Consider also that "managed by the people" is an illusion, as resources end up managed by *specific* ppl. Independently of who makes the decisions, you want available resources to be well-invested, & historically neither bureaucracies nor oligarchs have proven very good at that
-
Moral wealth is not wealth that's in the hands of the government, or the mega-rich, or even large numbers of middle-class people. Moral wealth is wealth that's invested in the future. And all of the above categories have the potential to mis-invest in tragic ways.

Exactly, there is no inherent morality to power and money in such large quantities is just power. Power can be used for good, or bad. Gates chooses to use it to do good.

wealth = resources for investment
govts & oligarchs both mismanage
i'm suggesting the immoral thing is to allow a system to exist where oligarchs can make decisions affecting everyone ("let's fix malaria") without having the accountability a govt has to its voters. -
I'm not sure voters bring much accountability. The government spends a lot on blowing people up and building walls, a lot more so than Gates. The masses can be used against the failures of the wealth based meritocracy in both the realm of capitalism and voting for regulation.
