About this thread. Some say this applies to Google too. This is the laziest kind of thinking -- just because two things share some superficial similarity (they're large tech cos) doesn't mean they're equivalent. Reminds me of pundits who kept saying HRC and DJT were just as badhttps://twitter.com/fchollet/status/976563870322999296 …

There's only one company where the product is an opaque algorithmic newsfeed, that has been running large-scale mood/opinion manipulation experiments, that is neck-deep in an election manipulation scandal, that has shown time and time again to have morally bankrupt leadership.

So please get over the knee-jerk reaction "all tech/advertising is bad", and think about the contents of the thread. For me, working at Google is a deliberate choice. If I start feeling uncomfortable, I'll definitely leave. If I had been working at FB, I would have left in 2017

It applies to a large extent to YouTube (and thus Google). Apparently accidentally radicalising feedback loops trying to maximise "engagement".

I get that FB was in the forefront of swaying public mood via algorithms but nothing is stopping google to do the same with srch engine and youtube. If google is not doing it already (who knows), nothing, literally nothing, is stopping them to do the same and a broader scale.

If you are really worried about this, then prevention should be the best remedy. You can't just depend on large tech cos. leadership to not fall into temptation. This is against human nature. Nobody cared when Obama did similar em 2012 because he was a responsible politician.

Sorry but it at least applies in parts to all of them:https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/976565165922512897?s=20 …

Love your thread but disagree with this point. They all have all my date. They are all using it. It is a matter of skill, will, and time.

You don't think search results and YouTube recommendations are a closed source psychological control vector? I love google and spent many great years there but they have the exact same problems(challenges)

Are the search results from google filtered to give lower ranking to certain pages? I think
@EricRWeinstein demonstrated this with results for 'pistols' in the aftermath of the recent school shooting. -
Then there is youtube, and http://news.google . And also a structural issue: San Jose Mercury newsroom is down to 40 journalists from a peak of 400. There is a possibility it goes to 0. I dont see how this is a good thing, regardless of what google's algorithms do.
