Language is a way to transmit, receive and synchronize beliefs. It provides generalization, too. E.g. you learn the breadth of shapes that maps to the species "dog" through language, by others calling them "dog".

To your point, some things and some stories are rather universal to human nature and human culture, and so every language has found ways to express them.
