Safeway cashier is correct. Language is closer to incidental. Latent structure of thought is basically that objects have properties, some of which are useful to individuate/name.

The tweet format casts a wide net, so I am also happy with the punchline from a usage-based perspective on language that contrasts the "deep representational" view. Nancy Salay's "Representation: Problems and Solutions" is a good survey.
