I think there is one scientific method. This is obscured by the fact that it is seeing little use in science in general, getting instead replaced by a plurality of not-so-scientific methods. Deep learning, in particular, does not seem to care much for it
This does not prevent progress, because scientificness (and thus effectiveness) is a spectrum rather than a discrete quality. But it can certainly slow us down, sometimes considerably, in particular when entire subfields get built on deceitful foundations
Reminds me of Popper's views on the scientific method. Is that the tradition of philosophy of science implied here or a different one?
The issue is more that the relationship between 'scientificness' and effectiveness depends on technological context. 400 years ago, 'you can only accurately predict what you correctly understand' was a pretty strong guarantee. Now, they're nearly orthogonal.
The role of hypotheses is also massively dependent on how much statistical power you can get. You don't see p-values in physics that much because there's enough data that bias and model misspecification dominates variance.
