Imagine building a world order that massively benefits you, where you're king, enjoying all-time high prosperity as a result. Then complaining that this order is "killing you", that you're "getting played", and starting to throw big wrenches in your own gears to "defend yourself"

What's even better is that at the same time, they claim credit for China's poverty reduction, despite them doing it in large part thanks to IP stolen en-masse from the west that we refused to share, and instead hoarded and protected.

Not as simple as that. There are limits to how much Laissez-faire globalization and nation state can co-exist with each other. As long as net effect was positive, politicians were selling politically correct lies that there are no limits. Trump is simply telling the plain truth.

Peter Thiel is one of the few American prominent people who get it right. Most others either take a short sighted view or talk cliches

Refer my last tweets. Either be brave(or reckless depending on how you look at it) to do away with nation states concept. If not, accept the limits of laissez-faire globalization in a nation state and stop peddling cliches as truth.

I would support your argument if you say: “America should remained open because it allows people in developing countries to prosper even though it might mean low skilled Americans losing jobs”. But if you say: Globalization is good for USA no matter what , that is plain wrong.

Ultimately countries become rich by developing their people. China was very clever, it used the golden period of globalization, but at same time also relentlessly developed its people, infra and basic science. It will soon be a developed nation. India did neither of two on time.

Trump is empowered by the millions of people who are disadvantaged by this world order, who find their jobs disappearing, their real wages declining and the advantage they were born into seized by more productive, better educated, higher motivated immigrants.
