The great pyramid was built by hand. It has something like 2.5 million stones. About 3 tons each, extracted, carved, and transported by hand. Whatever your own task, you can probably do it. One item at a time.

Because of the flooding seasons in Egypt, there were periods where farmers couldn’t farm, so construction provided employment. (Still, conditions were probably not glorious or anything.)
