A bit of perspective on our times. The tenure of Memphis as a major city lasted nearly 4000 years, from at least the 31st century BC to 700 AD. For comparison, Rome has only been a city for about 2800 years. (that's not Memphis, TN)

Indeed, but the Roman Empire was vastly bigger than the Old, Middle and New Kingdom had ever been, and it faced administrative issues of a scale precedently unseen (except for the first Persian Empire).
