After much experience and experimentation, I definitely believe that one cannot teach by criticizing and pointing out faults. One can only teach by encouraging, inspiring, and showing what to improve. Positivity is not sugar-coating, it is fundamental to the way we learn.

While the studies on this are effectively personal experience (kinda unethical to test this in a controlled way), regarding punishment, people become conditioned, but regarding rewards there is no such observed behavior. Conditioning breaks the mechanism, so rewarding is best.
