On the side, a subject I find very interesting is the weight of transmitted epigenetics and character heredity (I have children). I doubt we will sort that out because it's interwowen with culture and social interactions, and environment will always prevail among other factors.

The subconscious mind is child-like. Not uncommon for a habit or addiction "program" to be hard to overcome simply because the subconscious didn't get the program correction message. There are ways a person can establish communication with their subconscious. i.e. Psych-K.
