Hypothesis: tech crashes and AI winters, because they separate the believers from the opportunists, may paradoxically act as catalyzers of progress -- much like mass extinctions may act as catalyzers of evolutionary change, by abruptly transforming the selection landscape

The crash of expert systems led to the rise of connectionists and, eventually, modern machine learning. You may be right.

Interesting idea! I’m fuzzy on the mechanism. During a crash remaining funding is directed to more promising tech? I would think the believers are continuously working through the cycles, so how does the absence of opportunists help them?

Agreed. Also, the range of ideas that people will listen to or engage with will expand again. It's pretty small right now.

In some sense, the field will get rid of the exploiters (opportunists) and increase exploration again :-)

They align incentives better. One of the problems with crypto these days is 99% of people chasing it are there for massive monetary returns. Even if part of the 1%, hard to keep your project focused with lure of easy ICO cash.
