1994: “the internet means there’ll be no more governments!” 2018: “blockchain means there’ll be no more governments!” Both nonsense, yes. But the internet still turned out to be pretty important, and it was partly because of the things that prompted people to talk like that.

I disagree with the mobile phone analogy. I don’t think the impact was obvious looking at the early feature phones. They were popular for buying ringtones, sending texts, and playing Snake, but I don’t think people expected them to have the impact they’ve had.

Saying “Oh, this is BS and it won’t matter” is always a safe answer. Because, by default, most new tech will turn out being irrelevant. But having a high accuracy is irrelevant for investments. What matters is a high recall for the positive examples.
