Working on designing missiles at Lockheed Martin might have a lesser human cost than working on AI software at FB. I'd like to see the establishment of a kind of Hippocratic Oath for the software engineering profession, in particular for ML engineers & researchers. Don't be evil.

To paraphrase Burke, "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good machine learning people to be just doing their job".

And I may be burning bridges, but I would rather be honest with myself and others, and say what I believe to be true. Staying silent and taking no sides is a safe strategy, but it's an endorsement of the status quo.

FWIW, Google dropped the "don't be evil" from their code of conduct. But yes, this is a time for all of us in tech to introspect our actions and contributions. http://time.com/4060575/alphabet-google-dont-be-evil/ …

Kind of weird, I was thinking about this today. I have no idea why.

You can't design or engineer 'evil' out of human beings, however. So how can we be certain that 'evil' won't manifest in software, AI or anything else engineered by humans?

By continuing w/ long-running ethics violation in software industry we can ensure the manifestation of "evil". There are those in positions of power, influence and control who feed off such problems. "The way to become wealthy is to make people need you." http://3seas.org/EAD-RFI-response.pdf …

Working at Google won't insulate you from this risk. Things will very likely be ok with the current leadership, but there are scenarios with non-zero likelihood where your work may be leveraged for evil purposes. It's an inherent risk of working on powerful new technologies.

You could even argue that the concentration of research funding and talent at Google (and therefore starvation of everyone else) is a significant risk per se. It creates an easy target for attackers.
