    I hear people ask "why a roadster, why not do some useful scientific experiment with that payload?". To me, it's immediately clear that the pictures of the car with the astronaut dummy and the earth in the background are more impactful than any experiment you could have tried

        Personally, I would say a shark riding an elephant would have been a more impactful payload, and a better experiment, but that’s just me

        I think it was more Musk put a high likelihood of failure on the launch and just didn't want to risk destroying some expensive experiment when a fairly cheap car is a good stand-in for the weight of a payload. Also it's great marketing and inspirational in its own way

        Given that it was a first launch the alternative payload would normally have been concrete blocks. No one would’ve insured/risked a proper payload.
