You observe the species as a whole -- it can also be modeled as a system that takes in C & O and outputs CO2. Something strikes you: the species outputs orders of magnitude more CO2 than the sum of the individuals could. It seems to collectively organize to amplify its function.

Isn't it thought by many that "exploration" (high-entropy behaviour, seeking novelty) serves the purpose of minimizing "surprise" in the long term? As such, it would be part of the purpose of the organism (taking self-preservation and reproduction as given purposes of lifeforms).
