It would be neat to keep a list around a list of "simple problems where neural nets can't learn a generalizable solution, even with lots of training data". There are many of them, and they could serve as a benchmark for future progress.https://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/957685727969660929 …

Another blunder for simple neural nets, this time in language, _exactly_ as anticipated by Marcus 2001. Sure it can be remedied but casts clear lens on a serious underlying problem that @fchollet and I have been trying to call attention to. Among all 2^2^n Boolean functions of n variables, almost none is "learnable" or susceptible to generalization, regardless of the method. Any family of functions can only learn an exponentially small # of functions with a less-than-exponentially large # of samples.

For sure, we should not benchmark our models on artificial, meaningless tasks. But it seems there is no shortage of perfectly reasonable tasks where good generalization requires abstraction and reasoning. And where humans perform well, while ML does not.

I beleive the biggest problem with the AI development is the focus is towards application of XYZ technology in AI than the core requirements of AI. Its like ppl trying to fit a problem to some or the other available solution. #wait4vicki

#AI stucks in the human brain... and one of its biggest problems is its [human] generalization. Appears like a blind alley stucked forever in search of the holy grAIl, and we/it maybe better off separating it from humanoid dreams; #HMI
