Our challenge is thus to design information filtering and distillation technology that allow us to retain our agency, that empower us with greater control over our lives rather than manipulating us. More like Wikipedia and Google Search, and less like Facebook.

Aren’t “the algorithms” at this point a kind of shaded mapping of input states to output states informed by behaviors of others? So there’s the “shading” aspect and the “others” aspect that offer opportunities of concern.

Algorithms will have immense control, however, *giving* is not quite what is happening. We didn't have any effective control over this before, so perhaps *algorithms will be gaining* is more correct. This is key as it expands the set of decisions that are possible.
