The trouble here is that Sophia has raised $36 million dollars, scamming so many people. This will hurt so many people, and the AI field will be to blame.
Arguably it's like Bitcoin: people don't buy it because they believe in the underlying value (they don't even begin to understand what it is), they buy it because they expect it to rise in value. As they say, a fool and their money are soon parted.
Thankfully, drops weeds out the ignorant.
Hanson Robotics' scam is far worse than bitcoin. With BTC, collective belief is enough to maintain the value. With Sophia's ICO, once Hanson goes out of business, it's over. Unlike bitcoin, where "store of value" belief can prop it up. Pretty much guaranteed scam.
