Sophia the robot is dumb, but also not very different from past headlines about chatbots "passing" the Turing test. Theory of mind is fundamental to how we think, so it's very easy to fool us into lending human emotions & understanding to things that superficially mimic those.

The trouble here is that Sophia has raised $36 million dollars, scamming so many people. This will hurt so many people, and the AI field will be to blame.

Arguably it's like Bitcoin: people don't buy it because they believe in the underlying value (they don't even begin to understand what it is), they buy it because they expect it to rise in value. As they say, a fool and their money are soon parted.

Yes too often AI is applied to do things humans do just for the sake of it, just to be impressive, and not because it is useful to do so.

We should stop calling the field AI. Sets so many wrong expectations. Public should learn the proper names: ML, NLP etc.
