Sophia the robot is dumb, but also not very different from past headlines about chatbots "passing" the Turing test. Theory of mind is fundamental to how we think, so it's very easy to fool us into lending human emotions & understanding to things that superficially mimic those.
It seems most people don't see AI as a tool or a technology, nor even a disruptive force for society or the economy. They perceive AI as a mere story, a real-world reflection of what is shown in sci-fi movies. These people are the target audience for Sophia.
For most of human history, the popularity of animism as a belief system ensured that even a rock or a stream could pass the Turing test.
Agree that it's all contrived and scripted, leveraging the late night TV circuit to portray a "thinking" robot, but I believe the more people interested in #AI, however incomplete the narrative may be at first, the better our future as they come to grow and learn what's real.

There are key AI capabilities that are likely to be considered essential and important elements to stay relevant in the future. An AI that can be taught by a human to train the human being as being better at anything is the Holy Grail.

I have completely skipped the chatbot hype so far. There's nothing more disappointing than realizing a promising friend is just dump and can only memorize. However, there's value in a natural language "command line"
