Isn't MCTS sufficient on its own to solve any board game? The only obstacle being the size of the search space, for some games. Pattern recognition then acts as an auxiliary helper to prune the search space and make the initial solver more effective.

Exactly as stated, MCTS provides a general sampling based planning framework where DL or other learning approaches help either to warm start the search or to scale up the search in some way
