"The mind is an evolved system." True but was it mere happenstance or was it directed? The curse of dimensionality kills the happenstance hypothesis. Besides, we see a fabulous 3D vista in front of us that is 100% non-physical. It exists neither in the brain nor in the world.

The brain has only neuronal pulses to work with. How does a physical system convert neuronal pulses into a non-physical 3D vista that appears outside the brain? Materialists have no answer because they willingly handicap themselves.

Did you see the article in Nature about the giant neuron wrapped around the brain that might orchestrate consciousness? https://www.nature.com/news/a-giant-neuron-found-wrapped-around-entire-mouse-brain-1.21539 …

May I recommend the author Peter Watts? Specifically, the book "Blindsight"? Because:https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/513419-evolution-has-no-foresight-complex-machinery-develops-its-own-agendas …

I don’t understand what the two alternatives are. How could you tell the difference?

A physics theory of consciousness is by far much more interesting than just a serendipity

Both options seem quite similar.

I'm more and more inclined to think the latter

To try to understand the mind with just physics and CS is like trying to understand the universe with the physics of Newton... so simplistic and inadequate. Suggest people branch out a bit... start with Francis Cricks Astonishing Hypothesis...

But, of course, there is fabulous theory of cognition waiting to be discovered. Something as awesome as cognition is not the result of chaos and dice play.

Evolution isn't chaos, is it?
