Reread his claim. You haven't addressed it

Re-read the tweet and think about it for a while. It's not a far-fetched claim, it's almost a tautology, and could be generalized to almost any technology. I know you're a Singularity believer though, so I won't try to convince you

I'm not sure why you think I'm a Singularity believer. I just said in my tweet that the negative of your claim can't be known to be true.

All I'm saying is something simple and not controversial : you can not prove the absence of a path from point A to point B without knowing the path to point B.

I didn't read François tweet as stating definitively that (if there ever is ) AGI will have no path from AI as we know it, rather that we currently have no clear path.

I certainly agree with that. But the tweet said "there is no practical path". Not "we don't currently know of a path"

I think a lot of people are wasting time trying to invent AGI, rather than solve practical problems. Telling people that solving practical problems can't help with general intelligence discourages people from working on practical problems

Ah, now I see your concern. François' word choice aside I think he's in the same camp as you with regards to people wasting time. I think all non-hype people agree that solving practical problems is how to move forward. If a divergent path to AGI becomes apparent in the future...

I also think that both of you actually agree. The word choice is far from ideal, but I interpret his tweet as saying that we know to little lay out a path to AGI, not that there will never emerge a path. I.e. you can only see the path looking backward, not forward ;)

I do agree with this very reasonable view and I actually express it regularly

I’m curious (not sarcastic): How many of you all actually have toddlers around them on a regular basis?
