In so many ways, along so many dimensions, we are still in the dark ages of our culture. But I'm optimistic a more humane era is to come, and some of us may even get to witness it

This presupposes that human nature will change in the future. Not so optimistic personally. What I think will happen is that the instruments and applications of game theory will influence new kinds of human behavior based on payoffs.

Humanity taking control of its own nature will be the key driver of this progress

Have you ever read @stephenpinker ? His thesis is it's all relative and if you think now is bad... he'll give you some examples from before... just think about WWI when the best young men of Europe died gased in trenches...

I feel that dark and bright ages simultaneously exist in different geographies all the time but now due to global communication definitely there is hope for simultaneous upgrade for good

We have made a lot of progress on many fronts. But definitely need to keep working and not coast. For instance, the biggest killer of people today is not war or terrorism -but sugar, obesity and suicide. That is telling.

What *exactly* does humane mean? And is it enough? Some of the worst attrocities humanity ever witnessed were commited in the name of a more "humane" era to come. Communism comes to mind immediately.

I see a world immersed in hate, lies and deception. I have reasons to believe that a great age of global peace, prosperity and happiness is coming but it will be not be our doing. We need serious outside help. And no, AGI will not save us.

If we are in a “dark” when (if ever) was there a humane era?
