A possible causality relationship here is that, if you say disparaging things about a group, 1) you won't benefit from talent from that group, 2) you probably haven't seen much of the world or met many people different from you, which hinders creativity

Also, I'd say people are more likely to come forward with unconventional ideas in an environment that's safe and respectful. So if you want to foster creativity and contrarian thinking, you should in fact crack down on anything that makes people feel less safe or less respected

There is, in fact, a pretty clear difference between contrarian thinking and hate speech -- in many ways, they're polar opposites, not best buddies

Except that, as Bard Bird says, the best creative environments encourage conflict, not safety. There can be conflict without making it personal. Bad ideas lose. Good ideas come from the friction, not hand holding. Polite committee meetings produce crap.
