A possible causality relationship here is that, if you say disparaging things about a group, 1) you won't benefit from talent from that group, 2) you probably haven't seen much of the world or met many people different from you, which hinders creativity

Also, I'd say people are more likely to come forward with unconventional ideas in an environment that's safe and respectful. So if you want to foster creativity and contrarian thinking, you should in fact crack down on anything that makes people feel less safe or less respected

There is, in fact, a pretty clear difference between contrarian thinking and hate speech -- in many ways, they're polar opposites, not best buddies

Agree. It's easy to intimidate people and shut them down. The worst one could possibly do is disparage others' comments in public. That will shut down many if not most who witnessed the exchange.
