The "exponential progress" narrative comes from looking at superficial metrics that don't capture what matters for problem-solving: knowledge and understanding. Deep progress has been roughly linear across scientific fields since the advent of modern science

Even in booming fields where paper count increases exponentially (actually, sigmoidally over the long run), each new paper achieves much less on average that that of the previous generation of papers. Because difficulty is booming too, and so is research surface
