If you make a powerful technology available to everyone, some people are bound to use it to ethically dubious (or frankly sinister) ends. It's the price to pay to empower thousands of people to use the same tech to build, innovate, and benefit others

But we should certainly be carefully thinking about the net total impact of the tools we create. There are tools that are overwhelmingly beneficial, and tools that are more likely to be dangerous

Depends on the technology. If I invented a death ray I'd probably encourage government to regulate it before I released it.

The one problem with this argument is if crooks get a 1000x lift in capability while goodies get just a 2x or even 10x u end up increasing expectation of evil

Truth, but as the technology creator I should consider the evil use of my technology and regulate myself and/or don’t look away when trouble arrives.

Future technologies will be so powerful and so easily acquired that even if our civilization had only 1 or 2 bad individuals, it would be enough to doom us all. Knowledge is power and the internet is the best tool yet for knowledge dissemination. We live in interesting times.

As a guy in 3D printing this rings true. Bad actors constantly give AM tech a bad name.

Doesn't this really depend on what the technology is, and how the technologies are actually used?

Your logic reproduces the classic failure of utilitarian ethics. Who is actually going to be paying that ‘price’? People like you? Nope 1/3

The people who pay are the same disenfranchised souls who get ground under the wheels of technocratic ‘progress’ without their consent 2/3
