It seems many people in science and engineering have tied their sense of self-worth to the notion of supremacy of the hard sciences, and react very aggressively when suggested that humanities have value

I'm surprised how many people here seem to equate "humanities" with wordy essays churned by a small number of US college students in the recent past. To me, art, literature, history, etc. seem pretty foundational to our world. To our humanity

I feel like people forget all the great movies, tv shows, books, YouTube shorts, comics, video games, sportscasts etc are all written/performed by people from the “humanities” We need humanities in society as much as we need science/engineering

How many trained STEM people take "humanities" in university? Most higher education for Americans is debt driven, they do not have luxury of humanity

A lot of credit is lost at the school-level, where humanities are graded like a math multiple choice : dramatically different beasts placed on the same level to be compared directly ...

Welcome, you've just rubbed up against: US anti-intellectualism Richard Hofstadter & Neil Postman warned about in the 60s & 80s + a US media ecosystem that fetishizes tech elites as saviors + utilitarian dogma of STEM/STEAM + deep #rightshift inherent in SV cyberlibertarianism
