It seems many people in science and engineering have tied their sense of self-worth to the notion of supremacy of the hard sciences, and react very aggressively when suggested that humanities have value

I'm surprised how many people here seem to equate "humanities" with wordy essays churned by a small number of US college students in the recent past. To me, art, literature, history, etc. seem pretty foundational to our world. To our humanity

I'd be willing to bet money that that attitude has gotten us to where we are politically nowadays in the U.S., to be hard-core in the opposite direction. When you dodge the humanities to this extent, you lose training in critical thinking, source checking, fact checking, etc.

Humanities certainly doesn't have a monopoly on critical thinking. I actually think some of the humanities are devoid of it. And that's the problem most people, especially science and engineering people, have with it.

Some people value their self by siding with the idea of hierarchy when it's come to intelligence. This make it easy for them to imagine that they are superior by nature. I loved your article and share your thoughts.

I hope that nobody lives under the illusion that engineering is a hard science.

This. What so many fail to realize is that the sciences are just another form of texts, not without a politics, philosophy, and beliefs, but unlike the humanities they are often left unsaid and uncritiqued. Why technocratic logic is so virulent.

Whoever discredits the social sciences should be true to his/her convictions and stop living as a human amongst other humans and start living and acting like a washing machine, and optimize for longevity while at it!
