one issue with the no-free-lunch argument is that it only applies when averaging across *all* problems, but the space of problems we care about may be much smaller. Agree w/ your article, but I haven't figured out how to refute this counter-argument...

Agree about this part of the argument. Unless it can be strengthened, I think it’s a refutable distraction from the main argument.
