I'd say it's closer to 140 words than 280 characters. I swear, you can put entire novels in a tweet in Japanese

The limit is a good thing IMO - it forces you to concentrate your information, design your tweet instead of just writing a wall of text.

A growing limit would cause the same effect as the Buffer Bloat in networking - increasing bandwidth, but severely worsening the latency.
