While science is not "made up", it is collectively constructed by people, and thus it has its share of biases and irrationality.

Also, rationality is rarely perfectly held at the individual level. Some scientists may be v effective thinkers at times, crackpots at times

What matters is that on a long enough timeline, the criterion for selecting ideas is "effectiveness". This means science "works". Mostly.
