It is not the incorruptible beacon of rationality and evidence-based problem solving that some (mostly not scientists) would like it to be.

Also, rationality is rarely perfectly held at the individual level. Some scientists may be v effective thinkers at times, crackpots at times

What matters is that on a long enough timeline, the criterion for selecting ideas is "effectiveness". This means science "works". Mostly.

i.e. reproducible experiments and working technological artifacts are the tally of what is scientific.
