Seems a lot rarer for a robotics or AI startup to achieve real-world traction of its tech/products, than to achieve a large acquisition

Corollary: robotics & AI acquisitions are rarely useful to the acquirer other than as a source of talent to redirect on core projects

Rephrased: there's often a large gap between teams that can develop cutting-edge tech, and teams that can develop compelling products

Isn't this true for most pure technology startups in general?

@fchollet What's an example of an AI startup with a solid product (in the past 3 years say)?

I guess that's because all of these acquisitions are more potential- or future-based. Especially now since the talent seems to be scarce this probably makes sense.

For many the acquisition was the objective more so than a viable product. When startups listen to the idea that only BigTech has the data muscle to train effective DNNs maybe too many believe it.

That's actually how the startup world works in general. If your product doesn't fly but still you created value, someone may buy you.

True. Customers don’t care for AI first. That is why most startups in this phase will also struggle because they dont put customers first.

Great example Matt - Our view: great AI solutions take deep vertical expertise merged tightly with an excellent AI team. A veneer won't do.
