We are self-aware, and we are left wondering what that means, but we are not self-aware enough to understand what we are and how we work

A bit pessimistic but currently definitly true. But I am optimistic we will find a satisfying answer to that mystery as well.

Our brains create good-enough inferences of the causes of our sensations. Knowing how we work (and why) is not required for survival.
