I suspect that's anecdotal. I hear from both PyTorch & Chainer users, and the PyTorch ones seem more likely to complain (perf/stability)
At the end of the day, it's storytelling all the way down. The stories people tell each other, and those they tell to themselves

The surprising bit to me is why FB backing would have such psychological power. I personally regard the FB brand as extremely toxic

Even if it's anecdotal, spent 3 days trying to make chainer converge vs PyTorch worked from first try and so far didn't give me any problems

I have to agree with this. I see mostly TF in the wild, some pytorch/chainer (japan). A lot comes down to users.
