I've observed the same thing. No more mind-blowing GAN papers since summer
It is my impression that the world of deep learning *research* is starting to plateau. What's booming: deploying DL to real-world problems.

I still see limited usage of "real-world" problems, many people that I talk fall in this three, chat bots, fraud detection, recommendations

or in other words - get ppl to click, verify clicks are real, and decrease cost of customer service :) What about the medical field?
