ML is adaptive. AI has goals. 99% of programming fits neither description.
Most of what "AI" researchers do is further down the stack from intentional agents, like biologists who study proteins.
But there's nothing wrong with saying biology is the study of life, just because proteins aren't alive. Same as saying AI is study of goals.
