It can also be argued that AI researchers who are too busy implementing stuff are not looking at the big over-the-decades picture.
Some aren't, some are. AI researchers are the positioned to see where AI is going in the next 20 years

At least better than onlookers who were tricked into believing that DL works "kind of like the brain" or that AI aims at re-creating humans

Conversely, for the "big picture thinkers", there's no excuse for not trying to run and modify some open code given how easy it has become.
