The surest way to have zero success in visual arts or writing is to draw/write what's in your heart. Good art follows a small set of rules.

Everytime I draw something, the response is directly proportional to how many rules I was following. 8/10: great success. 3/10: no one cares
Following the rules feels like cheating. Easy, low-effort success. But rather unsatisfying.

I will also note that "art by the rules" doesn't have to be formulaic. Rules aren't templates, like SWE best practices aren't a framework

I find your perspective considerably disagreeable. The level of art, wrt rules, could be completely divorced from success with an audience.
