If you were to design a commute solution to be the least efficient, most dangerous, most destructive, least humane, it would be flying cars

Ground ICE cars would be far behind -- and yet still a massive nuisance.

The most efficient, human-friendly and environment-friendly solution would be an underground electric rail network. Plus urban planning.

Underground rail assumes the geology of the area is amenable to this type of construction technique. Approach doesn't work everywhere.

Urban planning is something that's hard to do after the fact. The MTA can't modernize because they have to run 24/7 or people can't work.

Easy to say, living in a place with working (if creaking) public transportation. Muni can't modernize because, well screw you, that's why.

You've never lived in London have you? The central line at peak times during summer is actually one of Dantes circles.

Electric bikes are even more efficient than even electric trains. And you shouldn't go into the hole like a rat.

What about underground electric carts that carry one automobile at a time? With car elevators?
