Arguably, large companies as well as open-source communities are a better environment to achieve this mindset, compared to academia

Maybe, but a lot of science isn't just code. It requires huge monetary investments upfront. You're not going to open source these things.

Stuff with a lot of time and work invested in it by large companies gets open-sourced in machine learning research all the time.
