Yes, it does advance fastr. But science does not decide its direction, there's always almost some government or corporation interest involvd

But as everyone, you built up your individual broad as well. Once established, it is easier to think large scale collaboration.

But large trends may head into the wrong direction and only that single genius figured it out. Then google would change course, right? ;)

I think that's true for certain kinds of scientific endeavours but not necessarily all. Important to understand when it can work.
