It also feels like language is the direct expression of intelligence. Our intelligence is ultimately limited by our ability to express it.

I don't buy that at all. So many intelligent behaviors are inexpressible. (esp. social status & cooperative behavior)

Would you consider Mathematics as Language for similar reasons, since Math too is "a tool for thinking: for storage, recall, communication"?

Math has slightly different properties but it is conceptually similar to language: a formal framework to cast intuitive thoughts
