Even with fairly ambitious definitions of "expert" (e.g. multiple papers accepted at top conferences) there are at least ~1000 experts
The figure "there are only 50 deep learning experts in the world" is worryingly elitist. It means "it's just me and my buddies"

Scientific inquiry focuses on explanatory power: *why* is x happening? Most deep learning projects don't improve understanding of phenomena.

That's fair with respect to what's being modeled, but there is a focus on understanding what's happening inside DL models.
