...just a tool, and definitely not a requirement for anything ML related -- not even for doing first rate deep learning research.
That said, everything else being equal, it's better to be good at math.

The key is to trust your intuition enough to allow yourself to use math to express intent rather than receive it as something to figure out

'I want to disentangle this' -> 'we need to get the eigenvalues and diagonalize'. That kind of feel. Proofs, formalism are less useful imo.
