Math is both underrated and overrated at the same time. It's a very powerful tool, the power of which people underestimate. But it's also...
...just a tool, and definitely not a requirement for anything ML related -- not even for doing first rate deep learning research.

I agree that math is unnecessary to apply ML but all good research I see comes accompanied with math. Do you have any good counterexamples?

Most publishing outlets require significant math component. Hinton has complained about this many times, including in his coursera MOOC
