It's clearly possible to have very abstract & long-running thoughts without language. But these thoughts seem impossible to store & recall.

Other keys: scents, taste, objects, scenery/location...

Remarkably, all of these aren't readily available to your self -they are external triggers. Their power of recall also tends to fade quickly

If the function is to store & recall thought, where does communication & societal relative homogeneity of language enter?

This leads to 2 killer apps of language: 1) generalizing this recall ability to *other people*, i.e. communication, and 2) external storage
-
Which is typically writing, albeit many other forms of storage are of course possible
