used to think that ML people didn't know enough math, that this was what was limiting the field. Now I think the field needs more humanities

Why we would need more math is clear: the field is largely empirical and mostly free of theoretical foundations (true before DL, worse now)

Opening up a math textbook (e.g. information geometry) at any random page can easily lead to a good and novel ML paper. Math under-exploited

But being better at building solutions is less valuable if you don't pick the right problems to solve and don't apply your solutions wisely

I find the field as it is now ill-equipped to deal with increasingly cult-like influences, & to take on significant social responsibilities

How to inject that? More ML reseachers with humanities backgrounds? 'interdisciplinary' projects? More ML as method in humanities research?

Anthropologists understand group behaviors and some, like me, look at this in the context of technological and social systems.

Not just ML, any tech field needs more of the humanities. The essence of the humanities is what truly defines what an "education" is.

An engineering degree is not an edu, it is training. Add to the lack of education good money, and you get a strange kind of individualism.

This is the key point I think. Whenever we talk about intelligence, morality is very important, and the sense of doing it to benefit others.

I believe the only fix is to make deep learning accessible to normal people doing normal jobs. Few saying "democratize AI" actually do this
